Redistricting Board petitions to implement interim plan

The Alaska Redistricting Board on Thursday petitioned the Alaska Supreme Court to issue an order implementation of an interim plan to redraw the state's electoral districts.

The board's legal counsel, Michael White, said in a press release that the scheduling order recently issued by the Supreme Court makes it impossible to put a new plan in place before the 2012 legislative elections.

"After careful deliberation, the Board believes that an interim plan must be implemented," said White.

in accordance with a March 14 order of the Court, the proposed interim plan is based on the board's Original Proclamation Plan with modifications made to the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) districts.

"The board's interim plan is essentially the Original Proclamation Plan with the same minor adjustments to the House districts within the FNSB as in the Amended Proclamation Plan," said White. "The Board rectified the compactness problems found to exist by the Court in Original Proclamation Plan House Districts 1 and 2, which caused a ripple effect across the remaining FNSB districts.
