In case you haven't read the cover story in this week's Anchorage Press, it's well worth checking out. Long-time Alaska author and ecologist Bill Sherwonit has taken on what will likely prove a difficult, rewarding project: Tracking down the full story behind the eccentric, public persona of Gordon Haber, who died last year after decades of earning a reputation as one of the most controversial figures that the Alaska wildlife management world has ever known. Haber was a difficult man to know, even when he was alive, but Sherwonit aims to track him down. Along the way, he's discovering the real story often leads to more questions. For instance, for years Haber was the loudest voice calling out to conserve Alaska's wolves, but he was also a big fan of former Gov. Sarah Palin, despite her permissive policies on predator control. There's no way to adequately summarize Sherwonit's piece, but give it a read, here.
