According to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, U.S. District Court Judge Lonny R. Suko ruled on Monday that Salcha residents Lonnie and Karen Vernon are liable for nearly $180,000 in combined unpaid taxes, penalties, interest and expenses, plus an undetermined amount of additional interest accruing since January. Suko ruled the government can conduct a sale of their house and other property to cover the bill. The Vernons' long-running tax fight is what criminal authorities believe grew into the alleged murder and arson conspiracy that triggered a multi-agency raid last March, resulting in the arrest of the Vernons and three other people, including Fairbanks militia leader Schaeffer Cox.
