Spring is here: It’s time to switch out your studded tires

Alaska's long winter is coming to an end. And if you're still driving around with studded tires, the clock is ticking down to the deadline for switching them out for summer.

Alaskans living south of 60 degrees north latitude – which includes the lower part of Southeast Alaska, part of the Kenai Peninsula, the Aleutians and Kodiak — need to remove studded tires before Sunday, April 15. Summer tires need to stay on until the end of September.

"Drivers on the Sterling Highway are exempt," Alaska State Troopers spokesperson Tim DeSpain wrote in an email.

Alaskans living north of 60 degrees – including residents of Anchorage, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and Fairbanks — have until May 1 to get their summer tires put on.

Troopers can fine you up to $50 for having studded tires on after the deadline. In Anchorage, police can fine up to $50 per tire.
