Food and Drink

Have a favorite camping recipe? Tell us about it.

When I'm planning to go camping, I'm never sure what to bring to eat. I tend to lean hard on some easy staples: noodles, beans, oatmeal, granola bars and some sort of vegetable, usually carrots. But I know Alaskans are resourceful and creative. I bet you all have some better meals than that.

I'm interested to learn more about what you like to eat while camping, whether it's for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a snack. What food do you like to make at fish camp or after pitching a tent next to your car? What about after hiking the ingredients out to a remote camp spot?

Last month, I asked for your favorite hikes in the Anchorage area. You answered and helped me write this article about 12 trails near town. Now, I'd like to compile a list of some of Alaskans' favorite camping dishes.

Have a dish to add? Share your favorite camp recipes in the form below or write me at thanlon@adn.com. (Bonus points if you have photos.) I'll put your submissions together, and hopefully we'll all learn some new meals to make the next time we're camping.

Need a little inspiration? Check out this recipe for campfire ramen from Kim Sunée, or pineapple teriyaki chicken from Maya Wilson. Julia O'Malley has an rhubarb crisp recipe you can make at camp. There's also this video of me making a simple bean salad in a much too tiny pot while staying in Seward. (Certainly edible, but I'd rate it a 5 out of 10.)
