Fly to Hawaii for about $200 — and other sweet airfare deals this October

It’s a beautiful fall day in Fairbanks. Last night, I met up with a few travelers to talk about the good deals available from here to the Lower 48.

Fairbanksans still aren’t quite used to enjoying Anchorage-grade airline prices, such as Fairbanks-Seattle for $121 one-way. But they’re quick studies at the airfare game — and are grateful for new airlines that are entering the market, which means lower prices.

Anchorage travelers should be particularly grateful for the latest round of fare cuts. Some are for travel next month and some are for travel after the first of the year. And this is just the beginning, unless you want to travel at Christmas or spring break. Then you’re going to pay the big bucks.

Let’s go west to east for the list of bargains this week:

Anchorage-Maui: Delta introduced a $208 one-way fare from Anchorage to Maui’s Kahului airport, starting Oct. 29. The routing goes through Seattle, which makes for a long day. But if you pick the right date, you can fly nonstop Anchorage-Maui on Alaska Air for $200 one-way: Nov. 5, 19, Dec. 2, 4, 9, 10 or 11. There are quite a few return dates from which to choose through Dec. 25.

Anchorage-Seattle: Prices to Seattle were drifting up from the $77 one-way prices this summer. Earlier this week the cheapest was $132 one-way. Then, Delta dropped the fare to $98 one-way between Oct. 16 and Nov. 21. Alaska matched the price right away.

Anchorage-Portland: Again, the prices have been trending up this fall after JetBlue stopped flying the route. But Alaska Air has dropped the fare to $128 one-way on their nonstop flights Jan. 7-Feb. 26, 2020.

Anchorage-San Francisco: Alaska Air just dropped the fare to San Francisco to $150 one-way from Anchorage. Most of the bargain itineraries require a long layover in Seattle, though. Fly from Oct. 19 to Nov. 18.

Anchorage-Los Angeles: Both Delta and Alaska are offering rates between $148 and $156 one-way starting in mid-October. That’s “basic economy” or “Saver” rates. But any time you can get to Los Angeles (LAX) for less than $400 round trip, I stop and look closely at the deal!

Anchorage-Chicago: Alaska’s nonstop from Anchorage to Chicago is one of my favorite flights. But to get the cheap ticket, you’ll have the opportunity to stop in Seattle for a few hours. Fly between Oct. 22 and Nov 19 for as little as $171 one-way. I think it’s worth the extra $27 to fly nonstop. But those flights operate up until the beginning of November, then there’s a gap until the Christmas break (Dec. 17).

Anchorage-New York: Fly Alaska Air from Anchorage to New York’s JFK airport for $224 one-way, between Oct. 19 and Nov. 18. Flights to Newark are about $15 more each way.

Anchorage-Boston flights still are available on Alaska or Delta for about $200 one-way, as long as you purchase your tickets 21 days in advance.

Anchorage-London/Heathrow: Keep in mind that Delta is part-owner of KLM, AirFrance and Virgin Atlantic. There’s a great fare on Delta and its partners from Anchorage to London for $578 round trip between Oct. 26 and Dec. 13. Or, fly between Jan. 6 and March 30, 2020. For some reason, the best prices are available at KLM.com.

Anchorage-Bangkok: Fly between Oct. 28 and Dec. 5 for less than $750 round trip on Delta and Korean. I had to go to Expedia to price it correctly because there’s more than one airline.

Anchorage-Delhi: This is literally halfway around the world, so I’m not wincing at the $950 price tag. The best prices are between Jan. 13 and March 5, 2020. On many dates, there is more than one airline involved, so I found that Expedia priced it best at $953 round trip.

If you don’t find the price you’re looking for to some of the far-flung destinations, check departures from Seattle.

Fly from Seattle to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania for $607 round trip. Travel between Oct. 2 and Dec. 12 on Delta and KLM. Book at Delta.com.

Travel from Seattle to Kuala Lumpur on United Airlines and All Nippon Air for $540 round trip. Tickets are available from Oct. 1 to Dec. 11, then from Jan. 9 to May 4, 2020. Book at United.com.

Another round of airfare deals is coming next week with a rollout of PFD fares. For a look at the best PFD travel deals, check out the PFD Travel Fair (pfdtravelfair.com) on Saturday, Oct. 5. (Disclaimer: I am the producer of this event.) It’s at the Alaska Railroad’s airport train depot — and the train will be there. Airlines, hotels and tour companies will offer PFD specials and prizes. Tickets are $13. Kids are free, as is airport parking with admission.
