This weekend is the last chance to register to vote for the November election

Sunday is the last chance to register to vote or update voter registration in Alaska for the Nov. 8 general election.

Residents can register a variety of ways, including in person, by mail or fax and online. The Alaska Division of Elections website at www.elections.alaska.gov has more information.

State election division offices will be open this weekend. Physical offices will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, said Josie Bahnke, the state elections director.

Online or faxed registrations will be accepted until midnight on Sunday, Bahnke said.

Bahnke said her office has seen a spike in registrations in recent weeks, helped by promotions on Facebook and in the mail.

Since the state division of elections launched online voting registration in late November 2015, about 100,000 people have updated registration information, and 25,000 new voters have registered, Bahnke said.

The general election is Nov. 8. Voters will be electing a new U.S. president and also casting voters for federal and state candidates. An initiative to tie Permanent Fund Dividends to voter registration is also on the ballot.

Anyone who will be 18 on or before Election Day can register to vote.

Early voting starts Oct. 24. The deadline to request by-mail absentee ballots is Oct. 29.
