Troopers identify 2 pilots killed in Southwest Alaska crash

Alaska State Troopers have identified the two pilots killed in Sunday's crash of a Ravn Connect flight that slammed into a mountainside near Togiak.

Timothy Cline, 43, of Homer, and Drew Welty, 29,  of Anchorage, died in the crash, troopers said. The pilots perished alongside a sole passenger, Manokotak resident Louie John, 49.

Clint and Welty worked for Hageland Aviation, also known as Ravn Connect.

The three were killed when the Hageland Aviation Cessna 208B en route from Quinhagak to Togiak crashed into a mountainous area northwest of Togiak between 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, officials said.

All three bodies had been recovered from the aircraft by Wednesday, which National Transportation Safety Board investigators said was "highly fragmented" in the crash.

Investigators, who returned to Anchorage from the crash site Tuesday evening, are conducting interviews and planning for the coming weeks, said NTSB Alaska chief Clint Johnson on Thursday.

Johnson said officials still at the scene are finalizing the removal of wreckage from the mountain.

"They were on the mountain all day (Wednesday) trying to gather the parts and collecting the components of the plane, with the intention of lifting them off the mountain" starting Thursday, Johnson said.

Those materials will be flown initially to Dillingham and then to Anchorage, he said.
