Anchorage commuters slide and crash with return of snow

The snowfall blanketing Southcentral Alaska is wreaking havoc on Anchorage roads, prompting temporary street closures and warnings from police to slow down.

Starting midnight Friday, Anchorage police responded to 44 vehicle crashes without injuries, six crashes with non-life-threatening injuries, and 40 calls for vehicles in distress, police said.

At 2:30 p.m., police alerted commuters that all eastbound lanes of Tudor Road at Baxter Road were closed due to an injury accident. Traffic was diverted onto Baxter, police said.

A tow truck left the scene of the accident shortly before 4:30 p.m. and the road reopened, police said.

Earlier Friday morning, a ditch-diving car blocked the inbound fast lane of the Glenn Highway near the Hiland Road exit, and police cautioned drivers on the highway of whiteout conditions.
