Large house fire in Eagle River brought under control

The Anchorage Fire Department worked quickly to bring a house fire under control in Eagle River on Saturday evening.

Multiple 911 calls around 5:18 p.m. reported the fire at a residence in the 12000 block of West Skyline Drive, said AFD Assistant Chief Erich Scheunemann. The house was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters responded, he said.

Shortly after 7 p.m., the fire department declared the fire to be under control, according to a news release.

No injuries have been reported in the blaze.

"It sounds like there was only one person (inside) and they were able to evacuate, that we know of," Scheunemann said.

The Anchorage Police Department said in a news release that Skyline Drive had "been closed completely" so the fire department could work on extinguishing the flames.

The road had reopened by 8:30 p.m., according to the Anchorage Fire Department, but officials urged drivers to proceed with caution as crews continued to work and roads grew slick.

The fire had also spread into trees and vegetation around the house, but no other structures were involved, he said.

Scheunemann didn't have information about the cause of the fire, which remains under investigation.

At one point, a total of 21 units were on the scene, Scheunemann said — a mix of fire engines, support vehicles and water tenders. After the fire was brought under control, the number of units on scene had dwindled to five.

The Chugiak Volunteer Fire and Rescue Co. was also on the scene, Scheunemann said.
