Ketchikan boater found dead after Southeast Alaska search

A Ketchikan boater's body was discovered in Southeast Alaska waters Sunday after being reported overdue from a hunting trip, according to Alaska State Troopers.

The search for 30-year-old John Wallace began at about 9:45 p.m. Saturday, troopers said in a dispatch, with a report that he hadn't returned from Bold Island, about 10 miles southeast of Ketchikan.

The U.S. Coast Guard found Wallace's skiff capsized near Bold Island, but his body wasn't found until Sunday morning, when Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad members joined efforts to locate him.

"At (9 a.m.), Wallace was found deceased in the waters north of Bold Island without a lifejacket by KVRS," troopers wrote.

Wallace's next of kin have been notified, troopers said, as has the State Medical Examiner Office in Anchorage.
