Woman struck by vehicle and killed on Glenn Highway near Glennallen

A Copper Center woman who lost an item from her vehicle on the Glenn Highway near Glennallen early Friday was fatally struck by another vehicle, Alaska State Troopers said.

Troopers received word at about 2:15 a.m. of the collision at Mile 178 of the Glenn that killed Susan Voyles, 54, according to a trooper dispatch. The driver whose vehicle hit her, 24-year-old Andrey Ionashku, made the initial report.

"Ionashku came upon a car stopped with its lights on in the opposite lane of travel," troopers wrote. "As he passed the vehicle, a person appeared in the roadway and he was unable to avoid striking her."

Voyles died "as a result of the collision," troopers said.

"Responding troopers learned that shortly before the incident, Voyles called trooper dispatch to report that she lost a box from her vehicle and was going to attempt to find it," troopers wrote.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said in an email that Ionashku assisted the responding troopers after placing the first call.

"The driver stayed on scene and was cooperative with troopers and the investigation," Peters wrote.

Next of kin for Voyles have been notified, and the State Medical Examiner Office will conduct an autopsy.
