Troopers: Driver rear-ends patrol vehicle on Glenn Highway, tries to drive away

An Alaska State Trooper suffered minor injuries early Sunday when the officer's patrol car was rear-ended by a Palmer man, who then tried to drive away before losing control of his truck, troopers said.

The trooper, who wasn't identified, was driving northbound around mile 49 of the Glenn Highway at 1:16 a.m. when a Ford pickup truck driven by Othniel Oomittuk, 32, of Palmer, hit it from behind, according to a dispatch posted online Sunday.

"Oomittuk continued driving away and lost control of his vehicle when he attempted a left hand turn," troopers wrote. "His vehicle exited the roadway and came to rest at the bottom of an embankment."

Oomittuk and his passenger were taken to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center. Troopers did not describe the extent of their injuries.

The trooper was taken to the hospital with "minor injuries" but released that night.

No charges have been filed but an investigation is ongoing, troopers wrote.
