Memorial Day ceremonies and events in Southcentral Alaska

Monday is Memorial Day, and here's a list of ceremonies and events planned in Anchorage and Mat-Su.

Anchorage

• Fort Richardson National Cemetery is hosting an annual Memorial Day service from noon to 1 p.m. Monday. Guest speaker will be Verdie Bowen, director of the Alaska Office of Military and Veterans Affairs. The event is open to the public. Civilians may access the JBER-Richardson gate beginning at 10 a.m.

• The Municipality of Anchorage invites everyone to a one-hour Memorial Day ceremony from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Delaney Park Strip on West Ninth Avenue. The ceremony includes patriotic music, spiritual words, distinguished speakers and laying of the wreaths to honor the fallen. Confirmed keynote speakers include U.S. Marine Corps veteran and U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan and Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz.

• Memorial Day services will be conducted by the Pioneers of Alaska, the American Legion and the Elks Lodge in their respective tracts at the Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery, 535 E. Ninth Ave. The cemetery will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Many families will be visiting and paying respects. The cemetery asks visitors to please be courteous and keep in mind the cemetery is a place for "dignified and tranquil grieving." Children under 12 must have adult supervision while on the grounds. No games, barbecues or pets are allowed.

• Mr. Prime Beef's Red White and Barbecue is a family-friendly event, set for 2 to 6 p.m. Monday at Eddie's Sports Bar, 6300 Old Seward Highway. Enjoy eats from Moose River BBQ, Jerome's Kitchen and Bear Mace Bites. Sample the complimentary chicken legs and pulled pork, plus other food you can purchase. The event will also feature music from Boogie Shoes and a beer garden from Eddie's Sports Bar. Free admission. Organizers will also take donations for Alaska's Healing Hearts, a local charity that helps veterans.

• Anchorage Corvette Association's Memorial Day Car Show will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Monday at the Northway Mall. Admission is a nonperishable food item for the Armed Services YMCA Food Pantry. All monetary donations will support the Last Frontier Honor Flight Group. (alaskacorvette.net)

Mat-Su
• American Legion Post 15 in Palmer will conduct an honor ceremony at 1 p.m. Monday at the Veterans Wall of Honor next to the Mat-Su Visitors Center, Mile 35.5 Parks Highway.

• Alaska Veterans Motorcycle Club's Rolling Thunder Memorial Day weekend ceremony is at 2 p.m. Sunday at Byers Lake, Mile 147 Parks Highway north of Trapper Creek.

• The choirs of Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, under the direction of Dr. James Nowack, will perform a special Memorial Day weekend remembrance concert at Wasilla Aurora Cemetery, 1096 Wasilla-Fishhook Road, at 11 a.m. Saturday. This concert program will feature sacred and secular choral works. The concert is free and open to the public; tickets are not required. (907-376-7771, wlc.edu/choir)
