Anchorage woman’s gunfire pierced gas line in nearby home, police say

Anchorage police say a woman has been arrested after bullets originating from her duplex pierced a neighbor's gas line.

Officers responded to the 1300 block of P Street around 12:35 p.m. in reference to shots being fired, according to the Anchorage Police Department.

Tenants in the downstairs half of a duplex told police that bullets came down through the ceiling from the unit above them, APD said in a statement.

Enstar Natural Gas employees had responded to a home next to the duplex due to a strong smell of gas around the same time, police said.

"When the stove in that home was pulled back, it was discovered that a bullet had penetrated the gas line," police said. "Enstar was able to shut the gas off."

Surrounding residents were evacuated from their homes, and officers spoke to a woman in the duplex unit where the gunfire was believed to have originated, police said. No injures or other damage was reported or discovered, they said.

The suspect cooperated with the officers, who took her into custody shortly after 1 p.m. Police did not identify the woman.

"She was alone in the apartment at the time of the shooting; the motive appears to be related to mental health issues," police said.

Authorities are still determining if charges are warranted in the incident.
