Coast Guard aids in search for missing Hydaburg man

The Coast Guard in Juneau says it's assisting in the search for a missing boater near the village of Hydaburg in Southeast Alaska.

Local crews in Hydaburg, a community of about 400 on the southwest coast of Prince of Wales Island, are searching for 20-year-old Frances Charles, according to the Coast Guard. Charles did not return from a fish camp in Eek Point.

The crews asked for help in their search Thursday evening. They reported that Charles was overdue from his 18-foot skiff "found near California Island and one of their boat crews located a pair of boots in the water near the beach at Round Point on Blanket Island," the Coast Guard said.

Alaska State Troopers, who also took a report about the missing man, said the boat was found about 5 1/2 miles from the village.

Officials say Charles was last seen wearing chest waders and a flotation jacket.

The Coast Guard launched a Jayhawk helicopter and diverted cutter crews to the search area.

Weather in the area was reported as 51 degrees and calm.
