Body found downstream from Ketchikan dam

A woman's body was found downstream from Ketchikan's Carlanna Lake Dam on Thursday, the Ketchikan Police Department said in a statement on its Facebook page Friday.

The body, found about a quarter mile downstream of the dam, has not been identified, the police statement said. Police also did not have information about the cause of death. The body was sent to the State Medical Examiner Office.

On Oct. 21, police were notified of a missing person and three days later received information that she was last seen in the area of the dam, according to the statement.

Police, the Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad and Alaska State Troopers unsuccessfully searched the area Wednesday, police said. On Thursday, according to the statement, the rescue squad searched the area with a K-9 team. The body was found just before noon and police were notified to remove it, the statement said.

"Due to the difficult location of the body," police said, "a helicopter was utilized to remove the deceased."

Josh Dossett, deputy police chief in Ketchikan, could not be reached Saturday for more information.
