Seward Highway reopened after accident near Portage

The Seward Highway was shut down in both directions for about three hours on Wednesday afternoon near Portage.

The road was open again around 4 p.m., said Alaska State Troopers spokesperson Tim DeSpain.

The accident wasn't fatal, but there were injuries. As of 2:30 p.m, the people with injuries had been transported from the area, but the road was still closed as troopers waited for tow trucks to arrive and clear the scene, DeSpain said.

The initial road closure alert came out around 1 p.m. Wednesday, from the Alaska Department of Transportation and Facilities.

"Accident on SEWARD HIGHWAY from MP 74 to MP 76 Expect delays, road blocked, be prepared to stop, emergency vehicles on road, thank you for your patience," the alert said.

A 511 map showed the accident a few miles past Portage Glacier Road, on the way to Seward.
