A 3-year-old boy was shot at an Utqiagvik residence Sunday and died of his injuries on a medevac flight to Anchorage, North Slope Borough police say.

Members of the North Slope Borough Police Department said they responded to the home just before 5 p.m. Sunday for a report of a juvenile with a gunshot wound.

The child, who was not identified, was first transported to Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital by the North Slope Borough Fire Department, police said. He died in transport to Anchorage.

The circumstances of the child's death are under investigation, but there is no public safety concern to residents, officials say.
