Man dies after boat capsizes near Kodiak

A 60-year-old man from Kodiak died Thursday after a fishing boat capsized, Alaska State Troopers said.

Around 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, troopers in Kodiak got a report that the U.S. Coast Guard was conducting a search and rescue in Chiniak Bay on the northeast side of Kodiak Island.

A 22-foot Hewescraft fishing boat had overturned with two people on board. One fisherman, Brandon Jensen 32, of Kodiak, hung on to the overturned boat for about two hours before he was able to flag down a passing ship for help, troopers said.

Troopers recovered the body of Welby Jensen, 60, of Kodiak, around 4:45 p.m. Thursday, troopers said. Jensen was a psychiatrist at Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center.

His next of kin had been notified, and his body was sent to the State Medical Examiner Office, troopers said.

Correction: An earlier version of this story said Welby was a fisherman; he was a psychiatrist.
