Coast Guard ends search for man who went overboard in waters west of Nome

The Coast Guard on Friday night suspended its search for a man who went overboard about 7 miles west of Nome.

The man, who has not been publicly identified, was last seen sinking below the surface by the crew aboard his fishing vessel Juda Lee.

The Coast Guard on Friday morning had received a report from the Alaska State Troopers that the man, who was not identified, fell overboard, and that the Juda Lee crew's attempts to recover him had not been successful.

An Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was launched out of Kotzebue to search for the man. He had reportedly entered the water without a life jacket.

Coast Guard helicopter crews searched about 41 square nautical miles for more than five hours on Friday, the agency said Saturday morning. The search was suspended at 7 p.m.

"Despite our best effort, we were not able to locate this man," said Chief Petty Officer Seth Caron, with the Coast Guard's 17th District command center in Juneau.

A Coast Guard official noted on Friday that the chance of finding a person who is not wearing a life jacket in cold waters are greatly reduced.

On Friday, conditions in the area included 20 mph winds, 5-foot seas, an air temperature of 32 degrees and a water temperature of 43 degrees.
