Police investigate shooting near downtown Anchorage

Update, 6:15 a.m. Sunday: Police Sunday morning said they had arrested 41-year-old Fue Yang and charged him with assault and reckless endangerment.

Original story: Police are investigating a shooting that occurred outside near downtown Anchorage after a man was shot in the upper body on Saturday night.

The shooting at the intersection of East 12th Avenue and Gambell Street occurred after the suspect and another person, who somehow was cut in the head, got into a fight.

Officers received a report of the shooting at 5:31 p.m, the Anchorage Police Department said.

The suspect pulled out a gun and shot a second person who tried to break up the fight, the agency said, following an initial investigation.

“When police arrived all three participants were still at the scene,” the agency said. “Both victims were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was detained for questioning. Police are not looking for anyone else at this time.”

Police are asking any witnesses who have not already spoken with them to call dispatch at 311, and press option No. 1.

“Officers are asking for the public to avoid the area while they process the scene,” the agency said in an alert.
