1 dead in collision on Knik-Goose Bay Road near Wasilla

One driver was killed and another injured in a collision Tuesday morning on Knik-Goose Bay Road near Wasilla.

Payton L. Petersen, 20, of Wasilla died after she lost control of her 2007 Ford Focus while driving at high speed, skidded into oncoming traffic and was struck by an oncoming 2006 Chevrolet pickup, Alaska State Troopers said in a dispatch posted Tuesday. Petersen, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died of her injuries.

The driver of the pickup, 52-year-old Wasilla resident Michael Moritz, was taken to a hospital for evaluation of minor injuries, troopers said.

The accident occurred just after 8 a.m. at Mile 10 of the busy road, troopers said. The road was closed for several hours.
