Fort Wainwright soldier died in Parks Highway crash

A Fort Wainwright soldier died Friday in a head-on collision near mile 161 of the Parks Highway.

Spc. Cameron Anthony Logwood and two other soldiers crashed while traveling to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson to compete in an intramural basketball tournament, according to a statement from the Army. Logwood was southbound near mile 161 of the Parks Highway in a Nissan Rogue when he collided with a Ford F-350 that was rounding a curve around 3:30 p.m., troopers wrote in an online report.

The driver of the truck took evasive action to avoid Logwood’s vehicle, but troopers said they crashed head on. Roads at the time were icy and blowing snow reduced visibility, troopers reported.

Logwood died on scene just before 5 p.m. The other two soldiers in the car were treated for injuries. One soldier was released from the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center and the other is in stable condition at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, the Army said in the statement Sunday.

The truck driver and his passenger were not injured.

Troopers said the highway remained open and traffic was directed around the scene after the crash.

Logwood was an aircraft fuel handler for the 1st Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment. Originally from Urbana, Ohio, Logwood joined the Army in 2017 and arrived at the Fairbanks base in November of that year.

Troopers are investigating the crash.
