Seward Highway reopens north of Girdwood after multi vehicle collision

Update, 6:45 p.m. Sunday: Anchorage police announced around 6:45 p.m. that the Seward Highway reopened in both directions.

It was not immediately clear how many vehicles were involved in the crash or how severely the involved parties were injured.

Original story:

The Seward Highway closed Sunday afternoon in both directions because of a multi vehicle collision north of Girdwood, Anchorage police said.

Officers were on scene at mile 92.5 and both north-and-southbound lanes were shut down just after 3 p.m. The area is roughly 2.5 miles from the Girdwood exit. Police said in an online alert that there were injuries.

A father and daughter died Monday in a three-vehicle crash about 10 miles south of Sunday’s collision. There is ongoing construction from miles 75 to 77.7 and 81 to 90 that will add additional passing lanes and improve safety along accident-prone portions of the highway.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
