Seward man dies while canoeing Resurrection River, troopers say

A man died during a canoe trip Sunday along the Resurrection River near Seward, troopers said.

Richard Hoversten, 52, of Seward started down the river near the intersection of Herman Leirer Road and Old Exit Glacier Road around 4:45 p.m. Sunday, troopers wrote in an online report. Hoversten intended to canoe a couple miles south to the Seward Airport.

Troopers said a friend became concerned when Hoversten did not arrive at the airport, and the friend flew over the area where he was canoeing but couldn’t find him. Troopers and personnel from the Bear Creek Volunteer Fire Department then searched the river and banks until midnight, when the search was paused because of difficult terrain and darkness, according to troopers.

The search resumed Monday around 8 a.m., and troopers said that Hoversten’s body was found about 2 1/2 hours later. His body was found in a log jam with the canoe roughly a mile and a quarter from where he started, troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said.

Hoversten’s body was sent to the State Medical Examiner Office for an autopsy.
