Both drivers killed, 4 children injured in head-on collision on Prince of Wales Island

A head-on collision Friday morning on Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska killed both drivers and seriously injured four children in two separate vehicles, Alaska State Troopers say.

None of the children were in restraints when the accident occurred on Thorne Bay Road, troopers said in a release.

Preliminary investigation showed that 35-year-old Jennifer Dietrick of Naukati crossed the double-yellow line in a 2001 Toyota, causing the collision with a 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Kerri Hansen, of Thorne Bay, troopers said. Both women were pronounced dead at the scene.

Dietrick had a young child in her vehicle and Hansen had three children in her vehicle, they said. All required medical treatment for injuries described as serious.

An investigation continues.
