Anchorage man finds woman dead in his unlocked truck

A woman was found dead inside a vehicle parked outdoors in the Fairview area Wednesday morning, and city police are investigating.

Anchorage Police Department spokesperson Renee Oistad said in an email officers were called just before 9 a.m. by a citizen on Karluk Street, where "he found a woman in his unlocked vehicle and he believed she was dead."

Police responded to the 800 block of Karluk and found the woman's body inside a Chevrolet pickup, Oistad said. There was nothing suspicious at the scene, she said.

Oistad said investigators were still trying to contact the woman's family Wednesday morning. It wasn't immediately clear if she had been homeless.

"We won't know her living situation until next of kin are notified," Oistad said.

The caller had apparently parked his truck for the night, left it unlocked, then discovered the woman when he was preparing to leave home the next morning.

It wasn't clear how long the truck had been unattended overnight. According to Oistad, there were no signs of any attempt to steal the vehicle.

Tom Pepe, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service's Anchorage office, said the city had an official low temperature of 26 degrees overnight Tuesday, with temperatures at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport ranging from 28 to 30 degrees around midnight Wednesday.

APD investigators haven't yet determined how the woman died, pending autopsy and toxicology results.
