East Anchorage standoff ends with suspect in custody

An armed man was arrested Tuesday following an hourslong standoff at an East Anchorage home, according to police.

The suspect was identified as Michael Froyd, 27. The Anchorage Police Department said Froyd has been charged with weapons misconduct and assault charges and was taken to the Anchorage Correctional Complex.

Police announced shortly before 9:45 a.m. that SWAT officers had taken Froyd into custody at the 1300 block of Boston Street, near the intersection of Muldoon and DeBarr roads.

The standoff started shortly before 4 a.m. A woman called police and told them she locked herself in a bathroom because Froyd pointed a handgun at her head, police said in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

"Froyd told the female he was going to kill her," police said.

The woman was able to exit the home at 4:56 a.m., police said.

Officers at the scene had established a large perimeter in the area during the standoff, blocking nearby Valley Street from East 12th Court south to DeBarr. More than a dozen police cars were present, and officers had been attempting to speak with the man using a loudspeaker.

Negotiators unsuccessfully urged Froyd to surrender before evacuating residents from nearby homes and deploying gas, police said; Froyd lasted two minutes in the gassed home before giving himself up to officers at the front door.
