Driver critical after crashing into light pole on Glenn Highway

One person was critically injured Friday morning when a vehicle hit a light pole on the Glenn Highway near Eagle River, Anchorage firefighters said.

Anchorage Fire Department deputy chief Erich Scheunemann said the collision, inbound on the Glenn near the Hiland Road exit, was initially reported at about 10:30 a.m. AFD crews responded in about four minutes, but weren't immediately able to remove the injured driver.

"There was extrication involved," Scheunemann said.

The patient was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, Scheunemann said. State road-conditions website 511.alaska.gov reported that the inbound Hiland Road exit had been temporarily closed by the crash.

A call requesting further information on the crash from Anchorage police dispatchers wasn't returned Friday morning.
