Fires damage homes in Anchorage and Eagle River, but nobody hurt

House fires in West Anchorage and Eagle River early Monday caused heavy damage but no injuries.

Thirteen fire units were dispatched to each of the blazes, which were reported at about 2:20 a.m. on the 3200 block of Milky Way Circle in the Turnagain neighborhood and 4:30 a.m. on the 17200 block of Baranoff Avenue in Eagle River, according to Anchorage Fire Department deputy chief for operations Jodie Hettrick.

Crews responding to the Milky Way Circle call found a fast-moving fire that had already consumed much of the residence.

"We ended up using defensive operations on that one, because so much of the structure was involved," Hettrick said.

The Baranoff Avenue fire was less intense, Hettrick said, but firefighters had to call natural gas utility Enstar to help secure the home due to damage.

"When we got on scene it was about 25 percent involved," Hettrick said. "The gas meter was impinged by fire, so we were on scene longer than usual."

The Red Cross of Alaska was called to assist two adults and four children from the home on Milky Way, Hettrick said. A statement on the Red Cross of Alaska's Facebook page said the family received "comfort kits, stuffed animals and financial assistance to help meet immediate needs."

Causes and damage estimates for both fires remain under investigation.
