Truck slams into Anchorage police car responding to traffic emergency

A truck crashed into an Anchorage police car responding to an emergency Friday morning, sending the occupants of both vehicles to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, a police spokesman said.

The accident happened at 8:42 a.m. at the intersection of Benson Boulevard and the Seward Highway, spokesman MJ Thim said.

The officer had the car's lights and sirens activated during the response, Thim said.

"It was for a report of a female jumping in and out of the street at the intersection of Tudor Road and Piper Street," he said.

The officer was traveling eastbound on Benson and had a red light at the intersection. She was in the process of clearing traffic, Thim said.

Her car had entered the intersection when a Chevrolet Avalanche traveling northbound on the Seward Highway failed to stop and hit the passenger side of the patrol car, Thim said.

The impact pushed both vehicles onto the property of a Wendy's restaurant, Thim said.

The officer and the driver of the Chevrolet were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, he said.

Police are continuing to investigate the wreck, and no one has been cited.

A single lane of Benson Boulevard was blocked for a short period of time to clear the crash and collect evidence from the scene.
