Motorcycle passenger critically injured in Old Seward Highway crash

A motorcycle passenger was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a crash with a convertible that closed the Old Seward Highway in both directions Saturday evening.

The crash, which occurred about 5:51 p.m., also injured the driver of the motorcycle, said Sgt. Dawn Neer of the Anchorage Police Department. The driver of the convertible was uninjured, she said.

Early investigation found that the motorcycle was traveling south on Old Seward Highway near Merlin Loop. The convertible was turning north on the highway from Merlin Loop, Neer said.

"The motorcycle struck the green car when it attempted to turn north," Neer said.

The male driver of the motorcycle and his female passenger were taken to the hospital. The passenger has life-threatening injuries, Neer said.

Neer said no citations have been issued at this point, and the circumstances were being investigated. The police department's traffic investigators were headed to the scene, she said.

Police closed the highway in both directions and were re-routing traffic around the accident scene.
