Police: Report of child with suicidal man false, wife cited

Update 11:30 a.m. Tuesday: The woman who claimed that her child was in a car with a suicidal driver has been cited for making false statements, police said Tuesday morning.

After police spotted the vehicle and took the man into custody, they learned a different account than what they were told initially.

"After getting the husband's account, officers followed up with the wife, who admitted to making false statements. She was taken into custody and cited," spokesperson MJ Thim wrote in a release.

Update, 6:10 p.m.: Police canceled the call to locate the vehicle. The child was found unharmed, and the driver was in custody on Monday evening. A resident spotted the vehicle and called 911, police wrote.

Anchorage police were notified of the situation around 3:30 p.m., Thim said.

The child's mother initially followed the car and called police, Thim said.

There have since been reports that the driver was in the Anchorage neighborhood of Mountain View and then in Ship Creek.

"We need the public's help in trying to locate this vehicle as soon as possible," Thim said.

Call 911 immediately if you spot the vehicle, Thim said.
