A man walking on Gambell Street on Thursday was struck by a pickup and taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.

The man, whose name wasn't released, was walking from 15th Avenue south toward 20th Avenue when the accident occurred around 7:15 p.m., Anchorage Police Department spokesman MJ Thim said.

He was walking on the road, not on a sidewalk or in a crosswalk, Thim said.

The driver of the truck that struck him stayed at the scene, Thim said. Police interviewed the driver and witnesses.

Thim said police believe the incident was "pedestrian error" rather than the driver's fault.
