Body found on mudflats near South Anchorage park

A man's body was found Saturday on the mudflats not far from Carr-Gottstein Park in South Anchorage, police said.

A man who was riding his bike along the mudflats Saturday morning spotted the body, police said. Around 8 a.m., he called the Anchorage police, who responded and found an adult man's body in one of the flute casts — groove-like formations on the mudflats.

"As any Alaskan knows, the mudflats are pretty treacherous and so we needed to take some extra safety precautions to get out there and once we got out there we found a body in one of the flute casts," police spokesman MJ Thim said.

The man has been dead for at least a few days, said Thim, and the victim has not been identified yet.

The body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner Office for an autopsy, police said. Police are investigating and asking anyone who might have any information to call police dispatch at 311.
