Speeding motorcyclist dies in collision with utility pole, police say

A man on a motorcycle traveling at a high speed on a major Anchorage street hit a utility pole and was killed Saturday afternoon, police said.

Anchorage police said the motorcyclist, identified as James Alcorn, 35, was heading south on Gambell Street between 15th Avenue and Fireweed Lane about 2:35 p.m. Alcorn lost control, hit the pole and was declared dead at the scene, police said.

"Speed is believed to be the only factor at this time," police said.

Northbound lanes of Gambell were closed while the investigation continued.
