Starting Friday, Anchorage drivers with a $20 parking ticket will be able to pay their fine in pens or pencils to support local youths going back to school next month.
EasyPark, the parking service operated by the Anchorage Community Development Authority, will accept 200 No. 2 pencils or 100 black or blue pens in lieu of payment for a $20 parking fine for the next two weeks. Participation in the program is limited to one ticket per license plate and must be paid in all pencils or all pens. Tickets older than 30 days are not eligible.
“Providing assistance by accepting school supply items for parking citations is a positive start in supporting our local students for a successful school year," said Demetric Tuggle, parking director for EasyPark.
EasyPark is partnering with the Lutheran Social Services of Alaska program HUGSS (Helping Us Give School Supplies), which serves Anchorage students in need, on the school supply drive.
To make a donation in lieu of payment, go to the EasyPark office at 440 B St. between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays from Friday through Aug. 9.
HUGSS will distribute school supplies for K-12 students from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 13 at East High.
