GCI wireless service restored after partial outage around Anchorage

Update, 5:15 p.m. Thursday:

GCI wireless service has been restored after an outage that affected parts of Anchorage, Eagle River and Chugiak, said Josh Edge, a GCI spokesman.

In the event of an emergency, 911 is now available to customers that may have been affected, police said in an updated alert.

Original story:

GCI customers around the Anchorage area trying to call 911 might not be able to get through to emergency responders because of “a technical issue with GCI cell towers,” according to Anchorage police.

“We are currently experiencing a wireless outage that is affecting a limited number of customers in Anchorage, Eagle River and Chugiak,” said GCI spokesman Josh Edge.

A technical support representative with GCI said they are “investigating reports of all calls going right to voicemail.”

Those affected were urged to use another phone to call 911 to contact police in an emergency situation.

“Our crews are on site working to restore service as quickly as possible,” Edge said.
