Snowfall makes driving treacherous on highways and O’Malley Road

Snow and ice were making for treacherous driving Friday morning on Anchorage highways, police said.

The Glenn and Seward highways, along with O’Malley Road, had all become dangerous during the day’s snowfall, the Anchorage Police Department said in an online alert.

The Anchorage School District canceled all after-school activities, including King Tech High School’s third session, due to hazardous road conditions.

Dozens of crashes that occurred in Anchorage since midnight Thursday were mostly drivers in ditches with minor injuries, police said.

Snowfall was expected to continue into Friday night, with a couple of inches of accumulation possible, the weather service said.

Delays along the Seward Highway between Bird Creek and Girdwood were expected because of avalanche cleanup, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities said. The work could continue until 3 or 4 p.m. Friday.

#SewardHighway users, thank you for your patience today. We work to bring small avalanches down so larger ones don't...
