Slick roads create treacherous driving conditions around Anchorage

Update, 6:40 p.m. Wednesday: Rabbit Creek Road has reopened, Anchorage police said in an updated alert.

“Use caution on the roads this evening and be safe,” police said.

Update, 6:15 p.m. Wednesday: Icy road conditions prompted the closure of Rabbit Creek Road starting at Elmore Road, where several vehicles have slid off the roadway, Anchorage police said.

“The freezing rain has caused icy road conditions to continue along the Glenn Hwy and spread (throughout) Anchorage,” police said.

Update, 4:05 p.m. Wednesday: Police said the inbound lanes of the Glenn Highway at Bragaw Street are now open and urged drivers to use caution.

Blowing snow and slick, icy roads created treacherous driving conditions leading to multiple crashes along the Glenn Highway on Wednesday afternoon, and police are now diverting inbound traffic onto Bragaw Street.

Several cars “are disabled due to either being involved in collisions or sliding into the ditch,” police said in an alert Wednesday. Multiple lanes were closed on the inbound Glenn Highway between Bragaw Street and Airport Heights Drive.

Police encouraged inbound Glenn Highway drivers to exit at Muldoon Road or Boniface Parkway and said that traffic is being diverted at Bragaw “until police are able to clear disabled vehicles from the roadway.”
