23-year-old woman died in head-on collision in Midtown Anchorage, police say

Anchorage police on Tuesday identified the woman who died in a head-on collision this weekend as 23-year-old Shelbey Skondovitch.

On Sunday around 7:15 a.m., Skondovitch was driving north on Ingra Street just past Fireweed Lane in Midtown when a southbound vehicle crossed into the northbound lane, police wrote in an online statement. The vehicles collided head on and Skondovitch died at the scene, police wrote.

The other driver was brought to the hospital “in an unknown condition,” police said. The driver has not died, said police spokeswoman Cherie Zajdzinski, but the department did not provide additional information on his or her condition. The driver has not been identified.

No one else was in either vehicle.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and did not provide additional details about the crash or say if any criminal charges or traffic citations had been issued by Tuesday.

Correction: A previous version of this article said the driver who crossed over the median was a woman. Police have not identified the driver or said if the driver was a woman or a man.
