Motorcyclist dies in Midtown Anchorage collision with van

Update, Friday June 25 at 11:45 a.m.

Police on Friday identified the motorcyclist as Tom Lee, 34.

Original story:

A motorcyclist died in a collision with a van early Thursday at Arctic Boulevard and International Airport Road, Anchorage police said.

Officers responded just before 2 a.m. to a report of the collision.

A woman driving a 1997 green Ford van southbound on Arctic Boulevard appeared to have run a red light at International, police said. The van struck a motorcycle westbound on International. The motorcyclist had a green light, according to the statement.

Medics attempted lifesaving measures, but the motorcyclist died at the scene, police said. He will be identified following next-of-kin notification, police said.

The van driver remained at the scene and was cooperative, police said. No arrests were immediately made.

“A charging decision will be made once toxicology results have been received,” police said.

The intersection was closed for about five hours while police investigated the scene and was reopened around 7:20 a.m.
