Officials extend Northern Lights Boulevard closure near Earthquake Park in West Anchorage

A section of Northern Lights Boulevard near Earthquake Park in West Anchorage is going to remain closed longer than expected this month, according to a city traffic official.

West Northern Lights Boulevard between Lake Hood Drive and Nathaniel Court could remain closed through Dec. 20, said Shane Locke, a traffic engineering technician with the city. That segment of Northern Lights, north of Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and Lake Hood, has been closed since late November.

The closure was supposed to last through Sunday, Locke said, but companies undertaking a construction project in the area ran into issues and needed to extend the closure.

For those heading west on Northern Lights Boulevard toward Earthquake Park and Point Woronzof, a detour route involves looping around Lake Hood.

From Northern Lights Boulevard, drivers following the detour would head south on Wisconsin Street to Spenard Road, then take International Airport Road to Postmark Drive before turning onto Lake Hood Drive or staying on Postmark, Locke said.
