Candidates can begin filing Tuesday for special election adding a 12th Anchorage Assembly member

Candidates seeking to represent the newly expanded District 1 on the Anchorage Assembly can begin filing for office on Tuesday at 8 a.m.

Anchorage voters approved a ballot measure in 2020 to add a second Assembly seat to District 1. Currently, there are 11 members on the Assembly and just one District 1 Assembly member, a seat now held by Chris Constant. After the upcoming election, there will be 12 members on the Anchorage Assembly, with two representatives for each district.

Only residents living in District 1 can vote in the upcoming election. Ballots will be mailed to those voters on May 31, according to the election calendar. Ballots are due to be turned in or postmarked by the day of the special election on June 21.

The Assembly recently expanded District 1, formerly called the downtown district, as part of the reapportionment process. The Assembly also renamed the district North Anchorage, growing it into the former boundaries of Midtown, West Anchorage and East Anchorage.

The filing deadline for the second District 1 seat is May 10 at 5 p.m. After that, a full list of candidates will be posted online at muni.org/elections/candidates.
