Deadline to remove studded tires extended to May 1 statewide

Alaskans throughout the state now have the same deadline for removal of studded tires this spring because of lingering winter conditions.

Public Safety Commissioner Joseph Masters has issued an emergency order to extend the deadline for drivers in areas south of 60 degrees north latitude. That includes Southeast Alaska.

The deadline has been extended to May 1, the usual deadline for Anchorage, the Sterling Highway and points north.

April 15 would have been the deadline for areas south of 60 degrees north latitude.

After the May deadline, drivers with studded tires can be issued tickets. A citation by the state is correctable to reverse a $50 fine.
