Light snow followed by freezing rain on Saturday turned the streets of Alaska's largest city into a gigantic ice rink, causing one driver to lose control of her SUV and crash into a house directly off of Debarr Road in East Anchorage.
Officer Tom Mackin with the Anchorage Police Department said the female driver of a Kia Sorento was driving westbound on the road when she lost control of her vehicle and entered oncoming traffic, midday Saturday. A Ford Expedition stuck the Kia. The two vehicles bounced off one another, and the Kia slammed into a small home -- literally -- with the Kia entirely entering the front of the house.
No one was inside the home at the time of the crash.
Ten fire department units responded, said Capt. Chad Green with the Anchorage Fire Department.
The crash pinned the woman, who was transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, inside the vehicle, and responders had to free her with heavy equipment.
The driver of the Expedition walked away from the crash uninjured, authorities said.
Both drivers were traveling about 30-40 mph.
Correction: The article previously identified one of the vehicles involved in the crash as a Ford Explorer. The SUV was a Ford Expedition.
