Just like that, Southcentral Alaska jumps back into winter

Welcome back winter. Light powder fell Wednesday night and most of the day Thursday in Southcentral Alaska, covering the ugly browns and grays that emerged after the recent meltdown.

The National Weather Service reported a wide range in snow depths -- from 11 inches at Peters Creek, north of Alaska's largest city, to just 3 inches on Hillside Drive in town. On the Weather Service's website, Amanda Reyonds reported "at least 12 inches and it's still coming down in Eagle River by the bowling alley."

But clearing is on the way. Forecasters were calling for it to be "mostly sunny" by Friday morning, with a chance of additional snow returning over the weekend.

South of Anchorage, Alyeska Resort was reporting 4 to 5 inches of new snow for skiers. And, for a change, Turnagain Pass got less snow than Anchorage. "The best surface conditions for skiing and riding today will be found above 1,500 feet in areas where the snow is deep and consistent," said Graham Predeger, a forcaster within the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center.
