Troopers: Death investigation in Gambell underway

The search for a missing 22-year-old woman in Gambell has turned into a death investigation after her body was found several miles outside of the village.

Troopers were notified late Monday night that the body of Gladys Aningayou had been discovered. Aningayou went missing on Thursday, according to an online trooper dispatch posted on Tuesday.

Her family has been told about the death. The body is being sent to the Alaska State Medical Examiner's Office while law enforcement continues to investigate in and around the remote island community of about 700.

Nome-based troopers are looking into the death while additional members of the Alaska Bureau of Investigation make their way to St. Lawrence Island, where the village is located.

Aningayou was last seen Thursday evening leaving a party with a man, according to public radio station KNOM. Troopers said her family reported her missing on Monday.

Anyone who knows about Aningayou's whereabouts after Thursday is urged to contact trooper investigators at 907-269-5611.
