Man taken into custody following Eagle River standoff

A man surrendered to SWAT officers after a six-hour standoff in Eagle River on Monday, according to the Anchorage Police Department.

Kyle William Smith, 27, is being charged with third-degree assault and weapons misconduct after barricading himself inside a home and refusing to surrender, according to a statement from APD.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Monday, officers went to the 15200 block of Husky Street in Eagle River because Smith had threatened people inside the residence with a gun, police said. A man and a woman safely exited the home before police arrived.

Responding officers determined that Smith had stayed inside with an unidentified woman. Neither Smith nor the woman lived at the home, police said.

The woman, a guest of the homeowners, was initially uncooperative with police, but she willingly exited the home shortly after 4 p.m., APD said in the statement. She has not been charged with a crime.

"Negotiators continued to try and get Smith to come out of the house. After those talks were unsuccessful, gas was deployed into the home at 5:27 p.m.," the statement said. Smith emerged from the house 20 minutes later, complied with officer commands and was arrested.
